Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert is an Australian scholar of Islam and the Middle East, educated at the Universities of Cambridge and Melbourne. Kylie speaks several Middle Eastern languages and has spent significant periods travelling and conducting academic research in the region.

In 2018 she was detained during a trip to Iran and thrown into the notorious Evin prison, where she eventually received a 10-year sentence under bogus espionage charges. Kylie served more than two years of this sentence before being freed in November 2020, in a prisoner exchange deal negotiated by the Australian Government.

Since her return, Kylie has published a memoir about her experiences titled The Uncaged Sky. She frequently provides commentary and analysis in the media on foreign policy and human rights issues and has become an advocate for victims of hostage diplomacy and arbitrary arrest.

This lecture will be about her experiences, her book, and the issues for which she remains an important voice.

This is a past event.
