Chinese Storytime (in Mandarin) 2015 at Clayton

In 2015 the Clayton Chinese Mandarin storytimes will be on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at 10.30am to 11.15am. Not held in school holidays. Free. No booking required.

Wednesdays February 11 & 25; March 11 &25; April 22; May 13 & 27; June 10 & 24; July 22; August 12 & 26; September 9; October 14 & 28; November 11 & 25 2015.

A fun, free monthly story and craft activity for primary school children aged 5-12. Clayton and Wheelers Hill branches host Blast Off ! in 2015 at 4 pm on a selected day.

A travelling photographic exhibition celebrating the contribution of German migrants and expatriates to Australian society 1935 -1956.

The history of the settlement of Glen Waverley presented by Janet Salvatore and Jason Brack; Towards Multiculturalism presented by Sabine Nielsen, exhibition coordinator/author and The story of Tante Wilma – a German migrant's arrival in Australia presented by Sue Dahn (Tante Wilma's niece)

Join us for the Launch on Thursday 5 February starting at 6 pm

Lesbia Harford's The Invaluable Mystery and the plight of German-Australians in WWI, presented by Dr Kretzenbacher.

Lesbia Harford (1891–1927), a poet/novelist, was one of the few women to enter Melbourne Uni in 1912. She campaigned for the workers' rights and against conscription during WWI. Disturbed that two German-born lecturers were hounded out of the university, she wrote a novel.

Ostarbeiter: the story of my grandparents, presented by Dr Ireland

Dr Ireland's grandmother was forcibly transported to work in Germany during WWII as a forced labourer. She met her future husband at a camp for displaced people. Together, they migrated to Australia.

Wednesday 25 February at 7pm

Maintaining two mother-tongues in an Australian Home, presented byDr Grieve.

A linguist's view on how a second language opens one's horizons to another culture, other traditions and possibilities.

Monash Writers Group

 

The Monash Writers Group meets on the third Wednesday of each month at Wheelers Hill Library from 6.00pm-8.00pm.

During these meetings the library supports local writers and helps them reach their creative goals by facilitating and providing peer and professional guidance through discussion, activities and programs. The Monash Writers Group will meet again on 21 January 2015.

Practise your English at our weekly Conversation Circles with the help of experienced volunteers. It's also a great opportunity to meet other people from your local area. Come in for a chat. The sessions begin from 2 February 2015, except as noted.

The library selects new titles each year to ensure that book clubs have fresh, popular and engaging titles to discuss each month.

Seniors Computer Classes 2015

Bookings for the first semester classes beginning in early February 2015 are now open.

They are a set of 5 free classes for seniors and offer an opportunity for people with little or no computer skills to learn in a comfortable environment.

Some of these sessions are held in Greek and in Chinese.
